Dostoevsky’s «White Nights» translated into Swahili

Russian House in Dar-es-Salaam



The Russian House in Dar-es-Salaam translated into Swahili and published the novel «White Nights» for the 200th anniversary of the birth of Fyodor Dostoevsky. The first edition consisted of 500 copies. The presentations are planned at the Central National Library of Tanzania, the Swahili Language Development Council and the Swahili Language Institute at the University of Dar-es-Salaam.

The literary translation was performed by the famous Tanzanian philologist and translator, Professor Joshua Madumulla, and the staff of the Russian House worked on the editing the text. The artwork of the publication was prepared by Diana Nekrasova, a student of the Surikov Moscow State Academic Art Institute at the Russian Academy of Arts.

The books will be transferred to the libraries of secondary schools and universities, to the Dostoevsky Museum in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Staraya Russa, as well as to the graduates of Russian universities, students of Russian language courses, artists of creative collectives.

In October and November, the Russian House will present an audio recording of the story on the air of the author’s radio program «Remembering Russia», and the student theater studio of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Dar-es-Salaam has already begun preparing a performance based on Dostoevsky’s work.
